The objective of this project is to develop technologies for ultra-fast heating and cooling of strips in a continuous annealing process. IRSID's contribution is the improvement of the transverse flux induction technology by use of numerical tools. CRM's contribution is the development of a new cooling technology of carbon steel strips using a liquid as cooling medium. The following benefits are expected: to achieve new mechanical characteristics for steels, to increase capacity and flexibility of the existing lines, and to build very compact lines. IRSID's numerical validated modelling of various transverse flux inductors showed that we can reach homogeneous thermal profiles with ± 3%, by using magnetic screens and concentrators near the edges of the strip. The technology using specific inductors with high power density makes it possible to reach 70% of efficiency for all the widths and also to reach power densities of 3 MW/m². CRM's work has allowed the development of new tools to cool down a strip during the primary cooling operation in continuous annealing lines. The introduction of some controlled turbulence into the Howaq tank has allowed the reaching of cooling rates as high as 600°C/s for 0.8 mm strips, while maintaining good flatness properties. The water temperature is between 75 and 98°C, and an addition of pickling acid (formic acid or HCOOH) is made directly into the Howaq tank. The measurements of the oxide layer obtained with this new process are comparable with the oxide thickness resulting from a classical gas jet cooling.
