This briefing aims to answer the request from the European Parliament’s Committee on Petitions regarding the transposition and implementation of Directive 2014/52/EU on the assessment of the effects of certain public and private projects on the environment (the EIA Directive). It presents the key elements of this Directive which deserve the EP’s attention during the next legislature, as they need to be reflected in the Member States’ legal framework as from 16 May 2017 to ensure their implementation. The amendments brought by Directive 2014/52/EU aim to improve the quality of Environmental Impact Assessment reports and the information gathered, as well as to reinforce environmental protection in the assessment of the impacts on the environment.
