The petitioner, namely the mayor of the municipality of Belvís de Monroy and its hamlet Casas de Belvís, on behalf of the “Yes to Almaraz, Yes to the Future” Platform raises concerns about the potential impact that the planned closure of the Almaraz Nuclear Power Plant (located in the autonomous community Extremadura) could have on energy security, the achievement of climate targets, and socio-economic stability in the region of Extremadura and Spain as a whole. In particular, the petitioner questions Spain’s decarbonisation plans, expressing doubts as to their compatibility with European regulations and with the recommendations set out in the Competitiveness Compass. The Compass is the EU framework aimed at strengthening economic growth by linking decarbonisation, innovation and competitiveness and supporting access to clean, affordable energy and industrial transition measures across member states.
