Substitution of chrome plating for the rolls of skin-pass mill (CRFREEROLLS)

The aim of the CrFreeRolls project to find a solution to a threat arising in cold rolling and especially in skin-passing. For long hard chrome plating has been introduced to enable high consistency of the roughness of the strip after skin-pass. This result is obtained owning to the hardness and the high wear resistance that is given by chrome plating.This technique proved to be very efficient to retain consistent roll roughness all along the rolling campaigns. However the hard chrome plating makes use of chromic acid i.e. hexavalent chromium. This last chemical is known to be highly toxic for... human health as well as dangerous for the environment. Because of its toxicity, CrVI is being progressively banned from industrial applications and complete banning will take place in September 2017, thus at short notice. Given the high performances and productivity given by chrome plating, its banning represents a risk for the skin-pass mill operation.
