This book gives an overview of the work carried out in the microelectronics area of the Esprit programme. Each project, action and working group is described in a standard format covering its aims, approach and methods, progress and results and potential impact. In each case details of participating organizations are provided together with a contact point. The microelectronics activities of the Esprit programme concentrate on the development of the process technologies, equipment and design tools required by European electronics system manufacturers. A major area of interest is the design and manufacture of application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs). ASICs form demonstrably the best way to achieve better performance and produce more cost-effective, compact and reliable electronic products. This updated edition incorporates progress and results reported since late 1992 and contains the first descriptions of the many new projects launched following the Esprit III call for proposals in 1993.
