HomeThe determination and elimination of the effect of antioxidants in magnesia-carbon bricks on steel composition and inclusion formation

This project investigated the effects of anti-oxidant materials in MgO-C bricks on steel clearness and ladle life. A rapid analysis technique , using Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), to detect trace elements and inclusions was also developed. Experiments were used to investigate the transfer of species from refractory to metal and a kinetic model is based on the results. Comparison between the model and experiments is good. Sulphur, from the refractory binder, is shown to influence the detachment of inclusions into the metal. Corrosion tests and thermodynamic calculation show no advantage for the use of anti-oxidants, nor MgO-free refractories. The use of anti-oxidants may lead to the formation of inclusions such as spinel and corundum. The use of anti-oxidants is not recommended for the metallurgy investigated in this project. The effects of purity of MgO and carbon content on ladle life and steel clearness were assessed in plant trials. The effects of initial pre-heat on decarburisation of the bricks were noted and a pre-heat practice was developed which was successful in reducing gas consumption. The trial results showed variable performance for refractories with similar compositions but different internal grain structure. This is consistent with the experimental observations. LIBS was successful in mapping element distributions in refractory, slag and metal. Inclusion detection is compared with SEM methods and advantages of LIBS in speed of analysis are defined. LIBS is shown to be a powerful tool and its recommended that its use be considered both for research and production applications.
