Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) is a partnership between Devon County Council, Somerset County Council, Plymouth Council, Torbay Council, Bath and North East Somerset Council and North Somerset Council. The partnership developed a joint Broadband Plan which was used as the basis of our bid to Government for funding to support the roll-out of superfast broadband across these local authority areas. The bid was submitted to Government in April 2011 and the project was awarded GBP 32 m in May 2011. The project was able to secure an additional GBP 20 m from local authority partners and a further GBP 41 m from its private sector partner BT, following an intensive procurement, bringing the total funding package to GBP 94 m.
However, alone, the delivery of improved and superfast broadband will not achieve our LBP aims and targets. Therefore, CDS has secured significant revenue funding to procure, manage and roll out a comprehensive package of demand stimulation support. The objective of which is to raise awareness of improved broadband services and the opportunities this presents, as well as the delivery of tailored engagement and direct support for business, public service users and residents; all to run in parallel with the deployment of improved and superfast broadband through to the end of 2016.
