COST 613/2 report series on air pollution epidemiology

On the basis of an initiative by Swiss investigators, a COST Concerted Action in the field of Air Pollution Epidemiology was started in 1990. Within the framework of this Concerted Action, two working parties were formed, one covering exposure assessment methodology for studies in air pollution epidemiology, and one covering health effect assessment methodology. A separate report, prepared by the latter working party, deals with health effect assessment. This report discusses methods for assessment of exposure to ambient air pollution in Europe. Rather than giving an exhaustive review of the large body of literature in this field, the report tries to summarise the essentials, providing key references for further study. It is designed to help investigators in the field to decide on research topics and methodology; it is also meant to provide funding agencies with a general framework forjudging the priority and quality of research proposals in the field of air pollution epidemiology. Contributions to the report were made by experts from different European countries. A draft report was discussed at a Workshop in Basel, Switzerland, on 28 August 1991. Detailed comments were provided by Douglas W Dockery, Associate Professor in Environmental Epidemiology at the Department of Environmental Health, Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, USA.
