Spotlight on Industrial and SME strategy

Europe has always been the home of industry and, over time, industry has proven its ability to lead change. Now it must do the same as the EU embarks on its twin transition towards the Green Deal and Digital Leadership. At the same time, the EU is ready to do what it takes to make sure its businesses are fit to achieve their ambitions in the increasing level of global competition.

On 10 March, the Commission presented its new industrial strategy and the SME strategy to go with it, both leveraging on the strong foundation that the single market represents. Thierry Breton, Commissioner for Internal Market, said: “Europe has the strongest industry in the world. Our companies - big and small - provide us with jobs, prosperity and strategic autonomy. Managing the green and digital transitions and avoiding external dependencies in a new geopolitical context requires radical change - and it needs to start now”. These are some reasons why industry is at the heart of the Commission´s political priorities and, as the Executive Vice President of the European Commission for a Europe Fit for the Digital Age, Margrethe Vestager, commented in her address to the College of Europe on 2 March 2020: “Europe’s future doesn’t lie in becoming more like America or China – but in making Europe more like herself.”

Below you will find a selection of publications that can help reflect what these words mean in the context of the European industry. You will also find a selection of some of the most interesting EU publications on other topics, including research.
