EU newsflash

The European Commission has proposed a package of new measures to strengthen the Security Union and to deny terrorists and criminals the means and space to act.

Spotlight on consumer protection and food supplies

The European Union has created many benefits for its citizens, with food safety and consumer protection among the most prominent.

Not only has the European Union issued a number of rules that harmonise standards for high-quality food across all EU Member States, it also promotes clear rules for the entire food supply chain, from production via processing and storage to the point where it reaches the consumer, including food prices and competitiveness. The European Commission has recently launched an initiative that aims at improving the rules applicable to the EU food supply chain for the benefit of all its citizens.

The EU also has the world’s most advanced standards for consumer protection. Thanks to the EU, consumers across Europe are assured that their rights are always protected, even when purchasing goods or services online. The European Commission is now proposing to update several consumer-protection rules in a New Deal for Consumers in order to adapt them even better to today’s consumer behaviour.

This newsletter brings you a selection of recent titles that provide further information on these topics.

The European Council and the Council of the EU through time

Decision-and law-making in European integration

The European Council and the Council of the EU are two key players in the EU’s decision-making process. Each has its own distinct role in the EU’s institutional architecture, even though politically and administratively a close organic relationship exists between both institutions. Both bring together representatives of the EU Member States. This booklet traces their origins and evolution through the EU treaties. It explores how they both played a decisive role in European integration and how their history reflects that of the EU as a whole: its policies and ambitions, its crises and progress.
