HomeDevelopment of electrically conductive polymer coatings for coil coated steel sheets

This project aimed to investigate the potential of intrinsically conducting polymers (ICPs) for corrosion protection. Since most works on ICPs for corrosion protection are on redox polymers such as polyaniline or polypyrrole, these polymers were also the focus of this project. Pure ICP coatings were prepared for investigation of the fundamental principles of the possible protection mechanisms. Composite coatings containing particles of ICP were prepared in order to study the potential of such easier-to-apply and technically more relevant coatings. The” coatings were characterised with regard to application related properties such as adhesion and weldability. Optical and scanning electron microscopy were used to study the morphology of the coatings. The electrical conductivity and the thermal stability of the coatings were investigated and evaluated under different conditions. The correlation between electrical conductivity and thermal stability was studied with a four-point-probe method and differential scanning calorimetry. Several corrosion tests were performed, and different electrochemical methods, such as impedance spectroscopy and polarisation experiments, were used to investigate the corrosion behaviour of the coatings. Extensive fundamental studies of the corrosion protection mechanisms were performed using delamination tests and scanning kelvin probe. It was shown that both positive and negative effects are an inherent nature of ICPs. Both positive and negative results can be achieved on the same system, depending on the exact conditions of the experiment.
