JoiningTWIP aims to support the introduction of TWIPsteels for automotive applications by identifying possible applications and further developing mechanical and lowheat joining technologies to be able to implement multimaterial design with TWIP-steels. During the first half of the project, relevant applications for TWIP-steels in automotive industry were identified, where high strength and crash-stability are an issue. The TWIP-parts were joined to dual phase-steels, press-hardened steels, aluminium alloys and glass-fibre reinforced plastics. Joining technologies were assigned to all material combinations. As the used joining technologies have an innovative character, quality boundaries are barely mentioned in standards. Therefore, the project team defined own quality standards, where necessary. After the joining trials were performed, the project team showed that four out of five used joining technologies in this project showed the potential to be further optimised as suitable joining technologies for multi-material joints with TWIP-steels. Basing on these findings, optimisation measures were identified and executed. The used strategies comprise the adjustment of pro-cess parameters, the use of specialised tools as well as the further development of joining elements just as tacks and elements for friction element welding. It was possible to achieve optimised joints for four out of five joining technologies. Furthermore, the project team was able to determine the first corrosion characteristics of multi-material joints with TWIP-steels. In addition, FE-models were set up for all joining technologies. After reviewing the optimised joints, the project team was able to identify for each application one multi-material combination, which were further analysed in laboratory tests and with demonstrators and prototypes. The aim of the project was reached as the corresponding tasks were successfully edited and scheduled during the planned project duration.
