The European Commission convened a workshop on “Marine genetic resources in areas beyond national jurisdiction: bridging policy, law, science and research and development” on the 21st and 22nd May 2019. The focus was on marine genetic resources (MGR) in the context of ongoing negotiations for a new legally binding instrument under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ) (General Assembly resolution 72/249). Approximately 90 experts from the fields of science, policy and law, and industry gathered in Brussels to present their experiences with the different aspects related to research and development with MGR, and to join in discussions on these topics with delegates from the UN negotiations on BBNJ. The overarching aim of the workshop was to facilitate the sharing of knowledge and experiences between participants to help bridge the gaps between policy, law, science and research and development (R&D). This workshop also brought together a wide variety of views from developed and developing countries, representing a broad geographical distribution.
