The third volume of " De Ferri Metallographia", like the two preceding volumes, has been prepared under the auspices of the High Authority of the ECSC. It is concerned with the as-cast structures of steel and the various aspects of' these after plastic deformation. As such it ¡s a logical sequel to Volume 1 which deals, amongst other things, with structures on the micro-scale (nature of the various phases in steels), and to Volume II which shows how the constituents of various grades of steel are distributed after heat treatment. This distribution of the constituents varies with the degree of homogeneity of the initial ingot.
