New short cooling equipment has been tested in the normal operating conditions of the hot-strip mill for cooling the strip coming out of the mill in a very fast and controllable way. This prototype equipment has proven its ability to realise fast cooling on strip hot rolled at high speed with a high accuracy in the control of the cooling efficiency and cooling-stop temperature. In order to reduce the risk of cobble due to the braking effect of water when the cooling unit is installed just after the last finishing stand (‘early UFC’), a pinch roll has been developed and tested at the exit of the intensive cooling zone in order to reduce the yield losses for the thinner strips. The trials successfully performed with the pinch-roll unit demonstrate that it is possible to pinch and to guide the strip from the pinch-roll equipment to the downcoiler area without any risk of cobble and without any detrimental effects on the quality of the strip or the coiling aspect. Industrial trials have demonstrated the possibility to apply the fast thermal cooling schedule at the end of the runout table just before the downcoilers (‘late UFC’) after air or laminar cooling. Laminar cooling/ultra-fast cooling combinations generate multiphase microstructures and improved mechanical properties. The proportion of each phase (ferrite-bainite-martensite) is adapted by changing the cooling profile, while detrimental acicular ferrite, usually formed at the different temperature levels of a continuous cooling process, can be avoided. The compromise high-strength ductility is improved. Moreover, multiphase microstructures can be conferred on many different steel grades (TS = 550-900 Mpa), decreasing the alloying content (Mn, Cr, Nb, etc.).
