Within the framework of the „New Approach to Technical Harmonisation and Standards" as well as in other policies, Community legislation has taken to referring to technical standards elaborated by the European standards bodies rather than laying down technical specifications itself. This has led to a heightened importance of standards throughout the European Economic Area. Technical standards play a vital role in structuring economic relations, whether they lay down quality and safety requirements or ensure compatibility. Yet, despite their obvious importance, they have long been largely neglected by lawyers and legal scholars. Accordingly, we know very little about the value different legal systems attach to technical standards. This volume brings together seventeen national reports in the framework of the research project „Legal Aspects of Standardisation in the Member States of the EC and the EFTA", launched by the European Commission and co-sponsored by the EFTA Secretariat. The report on Germany and the comparative analysis are published in separate volumes. The reports are all broadly based on a questionnaire, reproduced in the annex to this volume.
